ARTS SA presents Pablo Ziegler Trio for Nuevo Tango

Pablo Ziegler Trio for Nuevo Tango
Pablo Ziegler on piano, Claudio Ragazzi on guitar, and Hector Del Curto on bandoneon
Saturday, January 30 at 7:30 p.m.
Ruth Taylor Recital Hall at Trinity University
Pablo Ziegler is an Argentine composer based in Buenos Aires and New York City. He is the leading exponent of Nuevo Tango thanks to the skills and reputation he gathered while working extensively as Astor Piazzolla's pianist in the 1980s. Ziegler's sharply percussive and metallically lyrical style bears comparison to both Vladimir Horowitz and Bill Evans. As a composer, Ziegler embraces Piazzolla's contrapuntal approach to tango music but adds jazz interpretation: lighter harmonies similar to those of Bossa Nova and extended passages of improvisation.
"his group maintains the essence of the nuevo tango which translates structural experiments into mood swings: astringent to sultry, gruff to tender, agitated to buoyant" – The New York Times
"the most successful blend of modern jazz and tango I've ever yet heard."
– Audiophile Audition
"Ziegler takes the tango to levels of sophistication and refinement probably undreamed of by Piazzolla" – Chicago Tribune
